- 'Supergroup' GTR comprised two of British Rock music's biggest names STEVE HACKETT being ex-GENESIS, STEVE HOWE ex-YES and ASIA - but also included the no less talented MAX BACON, a former milkman and previously a member of MOBY DICK, NIGHTWING and BRONZ, and the MARILLION credited drummer Jonathon Mover. Bassist Phil Spalding had paid his dues with BERNIE TORMÉ, TOYAH, MIKE OLDFIELD and ORIGINAL MIRRORS.
Howe had found post YES success with ASIA, releasing two multi-platinum albums 'Asia' and 'Alpha', prior to leaving in mid 1984. Hackett had ploughed his post GENESIS efforts into a string of solo albums ending with 'Till We Have Faces' in 1984 before uniting with Howe to form GTR. American drummer Jonathon Mover had lasted just one gig with MARILLION previous to uniting with the two guitarists.
The shortlived "supergroup" found the reception to their endeavours lukewarm in Britain. However, the GEOFF DOWNES produced album which took a costly seven months to record, nevertheless scored a worthy success in America selling over a million copies. The single 'When The Heart Rules The Mind' scored a top ten placing on the US Billboard charts.
Ex-SAXON drummer Nigel Glockler joined the band for a brief period. In 1987 Mover had joined MGM with ex-WHITESNAKE colleagues guitarist BERNIE MARSDEN and bass player Neil Murray, former TOTO vocalist BOBBY KIMBALL and erstwhile WHITESNAKE and TRAPEZE guitarist Mel Galley. MGM was, however, short-lived.
GTR splintered before an already recorded follow up could be released and, somewhat bizarrely, Bacon resurfaced on the TV talent show 'New Faces' performing GTR's 'The Hunter' and later contributed guest vocals to GEOFF DOWNES solo album 'Vox Humana'. Steve Howe rejoined his YES colleagues for the ANDERSON BRUFORD WAKEMAN HOWE project then formed part of the YES 1991 'Union' album.
Spalding worked on ROGER DALTREY's album of 1994 as well as ROGER TAYLOR's 'Happiness' the same year. He would also figure in the BRITISH ROCK SYMPHONY. The complete GTR of Howe, Hackett, Mover and Spalding reconvened for tracks on MAX BACON's 1996 solo album 'The Higher They Climb'. Max Bacon opted out of the music industry and became owner of the Farmers Arms pub in Rudheath. -
