- Born and formed in West Germany in the spring of 1984 under the initial name Energy, The Element was an international project initiated by French vocalist Raphaël Garrido — formerly the frontman of the Parisian hard rock band Warning — and German guitarist Hermann Frank, ex-Accept. The original lineup was completed by bassist Wolf Hettmer and drummer Tilo Heider, with Kai Hansen — later a co-founder of Helloween — making a brief appearance on guitar. This early formation worked with producer Michael Wagener on a first experimental demo, but the project dissolved due to internal tensions.

Garrido subsequently rebuilt the lineup, bringing in bassist Frédéric Guillemet (credited on the album under the stage name Frederic Smith), drummer Charly Torino, keyboardist Stefan Kürten, and guitarist Patrick Rondat. At the end of 1984, completing the tracks that Garrido had initiated, Hermann Frank independently produced this reconstituted ensemble under the working name Hazzard. In March 1985, the group evolved first into Stilelement and then definitively into The Element.

Under that name, the band recorded their debut album, Time — an eight-track collection — at Hermes Music Tonstudios in Kamzen (Kamen), West Germany, during 1985. The album was co-produced and directed by Raphaël Garrido — credited vocally as Ralph Towers and in the production notes as Ralph "Doctor Frantic" Towers — alongside Wolfgang Hermes. Creative engineering was handled by Glenn "Pico The Electric Man," with Wolfgang "Der Tierish Stratovarius" Pentinghaus and Ralph Towers also participating in the recording process. Guest contributions included Hermann Frank on guitar across several tracks, Hayo Sthal on saxophone (on "Time" and "The Element"), Rolf Schulte on Afro Jamaican saxophone (on "Sixteen You're On Display"), Glenn Pocoli on electric percussions (also on "Sixteen You're On Display"), and Brigitte Winkler providing spoken contributions on "Berlin" and "Bad Boy." Photography and sleeve cover were by Jo Dutertre, with the album concept devised by Pierrette, Ralph, and Frédéric.

In 1986, The Element signed a licensing agreement with Rock Records/Polygram. Despite considerable praise from the national and international press, and despite extensive promotional efforts including an appearance at the MIDEM music market in Cannes, the album failed to achieve adequate distribution — a debacle that Garrido later attributed to the shortcomings of a poorly restructured music industry and a critical lack of A&R resources. The group subsequently disbanded, leaving Time as a prized rarity among AOR and melodic rock collectors, and marking Patrick Rondat's first appearance on record — the beginning of a solo career that would establish him as one of France's most celebrated instrumental and neoclassical guitarists.

Four decades after its original release, Time received an official CD reissue in 2025 through the French specialty label Bad Reputation, with new artwork by Fabrice Trovato, mastering by Jean-Yves Legrand, and the project coordinated by Éric Coubard.-
