Origins in Avaldsnes

In 1987, the historic village of Avaldsnes on the Norwegian island of Karmøy became the birthplace of Heaven, an ambitious melodic rock and Nordic AOR project. The core of the band was firmly rooted in the Pedersen family: brothers Kenneth Pedersen (lead vocals and lyrics) and Roger Pedersen (guitar), alongside their cousin Tor Mikal "Tomi" Pedersen (bass). The quintet was finalized with Arnfinn Knutsen on drums and Vidar Stakkestad on synthesizers and keyboards. From day one, the band focused exclusively on writing and performing their own self-produced material.

The Phenomenon of "Take Me Back"

Heaven's polished, energetic sound quickly caught the attention of the music industry in Oslo. In 1988, they signed a recording contract with the Oslo-based label Slagerfabrikken. Eager to share their music, the band independently released a single in the summer of 1989.

That decision altered their destiny. The rock ballad "Take Me Back" connected instantly with audiences, heavily boosted by Egil Houeland at the local station Radio 102 in Haugesund. The track climbed to the very top of the national radio charts on Norsktoppen, staying on the official charts for 16 consecutive weeks—nine of which were spent at number one. It became one of the biggest chart successes of all time in Norway.

Production and Touring Frenzy

In September 1989, they officially released their 10-track debut album under the Tomato sub-label (distributed by Slagerfabrikken) on CD format with AAD mastering code (Barcode: 7048362201720). The album was recorded at the prestigious Slager Studios in Oslo, produced and engineered by Tomas Siqveland of the pop band Drama, with additional engineering by Per Sveinson. The original cover credits also acknowledge Asle Dahl at Bergen Lyd, as well as Tor Kvello for cover photography.

The radio success sparked an intense touring schedule. Between 1989 and 1992, Heaven played over 100 gigs across Norway, finding an exceptionally devoted fanbase in the Trøndelag region. On the road, they were supported by Henning Haaland on stage lighting and transportation, and an official fan club run by Roy Frode Haaland. In 1991, they attempted to maintain momentum by releasing the single "Children of Our Time" (produced by Mikke Anderson, assistant: Haakon Wheeler) alongside a music video directed by Eirik Davidsen.

Breakup and Legacy

Despite the high quality of the 1991 material, it did not replicate the massive country-wide impact of their initial hit single. The exhaustion of constant touring and the weight of high expectations fractured the band's internal relationships. In 1992, just as they were preparing to enter the studio to record their second full-length album, internal strife became too severe, leading to an abrupt breakup.

Following the split, three of the original members joined forces to form the band Huldra. Years later, in 2003, that same project's independent label, Huldra Records, preserved the band's history by digitally remastering and re-releasing the album under license from Universal Music—complete with the 1991 bonus tracks and interactive music video, securing Heaven's place as a cult legend of Scandinavian AOR.-
