Notes about Ron Bolton Band:

- The Ron Bolton Band stands as one of the most remarkable yet obscure treasures of the late 1970s and early 1980s American AOR and Westcoast melodic rock scene. Originating from San Diego, Southern California, the group initially took shape in 1978 under the moniker The Ron Bolton Group as a hard-working live cover band. The original formation consisted of a trio: frontman Ron Bolton on lead vocals and guitar, George Kosta on drums, and bassist Robin Henkel, who brought extensive experience from his earlier work with local acts including The Hi-Lites, Jumbalayah, and Cindy & Breeze. The band quickly established itself on the Southern California club circuit, regularly performing at popular coastal venues such as Halligans in Pacific Beach and the Triton Pub on the beach in Cardiff.

Approximately one year after their initial formation, the band expanded their sonic identity with the addition of keyboardist Mike Peters, whose synthesizers and piano work would become instrumental to the group's developing sound. A major turning point came when bassist Robin Henkel departed to pursue jazz, rhythm and blues, and classic soul projects alongside Johnny Almond and other accomplished musicians. His replacement, Dean Schulenberg, brought significant professional credentials to the lineup, having previously played in Prisoner—a well-regarded local band that had secured a recording contract with Warner Curb under the leadership of acclaimed AOR vocalist James House. With this definitive four-piece lineup solidified, the group officially renamed themselves The Ron Bolton Band.

Over the following years, the quartet established a formidable reputation as a live powerhouse throughout Southern California, regularly selling out venues with a carefully balanced setlist that seamlessly combined polished covers of major rock acts including Foreigner, Loverboy, and Def Leppard alongside their own finely crafted original material. This sustained touring success and regional recognition culminated in 1983, when the band independently recorded ten of their self-penned songs at Mar Scenic Studios. The tracks were subsequently mixed at Encino Sound in Los Angeles and mastered at Award Record MFG., Inc. in Inglewood, with engineering assistance provided by Dave Ravel and Bob Frye.

The resulting self-titled album exemplified early 1980s melodic rock craftsmanship, blending classic rock guitars with the polished grandiosity of pomp rock and Westcoast sensibilities. The opening track, "Maybe I'm Dreamin'" (Ron Bolton), immediately established the album's commercial balance with an infectious hookline and assertive guitar solo that earned substantial local radio airplay. Ron Bolton authored the majority of the album's material, including the pomp-rock anthem "21," the muscular "Livin' On The Line"—which featured powerful guitar work reminiscent of Toto's Turn Back era—and the sophisticated Westcoast ballad "Midnight Lover." Keyboardist Mike Peters contributed "Do It All For Love" and "Play Your Game," while the album's collaborative tracks showcased the band's openness to outside creativity: "Search Of The Kind," originally co-written by Schulenberg during his Prisoner days with Tony Talbot and James House, was reshaped around Peters' prominent organ work; "Friends" was composed by Tony Talbot; and "Little Girl" emerged from a collaboration between Joe Alocia and Dean Schulenberg.

Due to the absence of major label backing and broad distribution infrastructure, the self-titled vinyl LP became a strictly limited private pressing. The band members undertook pressing and distribution entirely on their own terms, selling copies directly from the stage after performances and manually stocking local Tower Records outlets. This limited availability transformed the record into a highly sought-after artifact among collectors, commanding significant prices on the European and Japanese rare vinyl markets.

The band continued to perform live for several years following the album's release before dissolving during the second half of the 1980s. The Ron Bolton Band's musical legacy remained largely unknown to the broader music public for over a quarter century, recognized primarily by dedicated collectors of obscure melodic rock recordings.

In 2009, the independent German label Avenue Of Allies Music, under executive producer Gregor Klee, rescued the original master tapes and issued the album officially on CD for the first time. Klee adapted the original cover artwork—designed by Brian McCarthy for the 1983 LP—for the digital release, while engineer Scharaf Girges undertook a complete digital audio remastering. The CD booklet carried a dedication to the memory of keyboardist Mike Peters, permanently securing the band's sophisticated arrangements and musicianship within the international melodic rock archive. -
